The Ethereum Foundation's Devcon 8 concluded its four day run at Mumbai's Jio World Centre from November 3 to 6, 2026, bringing developers and researchers together for discussions on Ethereum's technical direction.

The conference featured sessions on formal verification, AI assisted development and cross chain execution, alongside a major demonstration of the Ethereum Economic Zone. However, reactions from attendees were mixed. While some appreciated the technical sessions and networking opportunities, others raised concerns about attendance, local participation and behaviour around merchandise booths.

Devcon 8 Focuses on Ethereum Engineering & Technical Development

Devcon 8 placed considerable attention on the engineering challenges facing Ethereum. Formal verification, artificial intelligence in software development, security and cross chain infrastructure featured among the technical subjects discussed during the event.

Formal verification attracted attention because of its importance in checking whether software behaves according to defined mathematical properties. Discussions also examined the difficulties of applying these methods to increasingly complex code, even with AI tools assisting developers.

AI assisted development was another important subject, with the conference exploring how artificial intelligence is changing the way developers build and examine software.

The official Devcon programme covered nine technical and community tracks, including Core Protocol, Security, Applied Cryptography, Privacy and Consent, Permissionless Networks, and Open and Verifiable Stack. The programme also included discussions around governance, digital rights and the future of applications built on Ethereum.

EtherWorld's Latest Coverage Highlights Ethereum Developments

EtherWorld's coverage surrounding Devcon 8 has also focused on developments beyond the conference sessions.

Its October 30 announcement highlighted Mumbai's selection as the host city and the opportunity to bring Ethereum's international developer community closer to Indian contributors.

EtherWorld Weekly Edition 388, published on November 1, also featured Devcon 8 in its community spotlight. The edition discussed the conference alongside developments in Ethereum's protocol roadmap, including Hegotá proposals, post quantum signatures and FOCIL implementation discussions.

The Ethereum Economic Zone was another important development emerging during the conference. Gnosis published details of its planned integration with the framework, making it one of the most significant technical announcements associated with Devcon 8.

These developments give the event a broader technical context, beyond the presentations and networking activities taking place at the venue.

Ethereum Economic Zone Demonstrates Synchronous Composability

One of the major technical highlights was the demonstration of synchronous composability through the Ethereum Economic Zone framework.

The demonstration introduced Rollup X, an Ethereum Economic Zone development network that allows contracts operating across Ethereum and participating rollups to interact within a single transaction.

This approach addresses a major challenge associated with separate blockchain networks. Applications operating across different chains often depend on bridges and multiple transaction steps. Synchronous composability aims to allow contracts on different participating networks to communicate and complete operations atomically. The demonstration included three notable examples.

CoWSwap demonstrated how an order originating on Rollup X could access liquidity on Ethereum mainnet and return the resulting tokens within the same transaction.

Safe demonstrated atomic changes to account ownership across Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks. This allows ownership updates to be recognised across participating networks without requiring separate changes on each chain.

A third demonstration involved verifying a post quantum Falcon signature on Rollup X and using the result to authorise a Safe transaction on Ethereum mainnet.

Gnosis also announced that Gnosis Chain is scheduled to become the first general purpose zone within the Ethereum Economic Zone in spring 2027. Its existing contracts, balances, addresses, chain ID and xDAI gas token are expected to carry over through a hard fork.

Attendees Praise the Experience but Raise Concerns Over Turnout

Despite the technical announcements, Devcon 8 received mixed reactions from people attending the event.

Some participants appreciated the venue atmosphere, technical discussions and opportunities to connect with developers working on different parts of the Ethereum ecosystem. Informal meetings and networking sessions were particularly valuable for attendees who wanted to build relationships beyond scheduled presentations.

However, not everyone was satisfied with the overall experience. Some attendees described relatively subdued participation, with fewer local participants appearing by the second day. Concerns were also raised about merchandise hunters crowding booths and pushing other visitors while trying to collect promotional items.

These complaints presented a different picture from the technical enthusiasm surrounding the conference. Although the event attracted developers interested in Ethereum's future, questions about community participation and on site organisation remained part of the discussion.

Side events and informal meetups helped maintain activity around the conference. These gatherings provided additional opportunities for developers and community members to exchange ideas outside the main programme.

The mixed response also comes at a time when Ethereum's ecosystem is examining its priorities, technical direction and relationship with its wider developer community. The Mumbai conference brought these discussions into an Indian setting, with the Ethereum Economic Zone demonstration providing one of its most significant technical developments.
