Highlights from the All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) Call #240

At ACDE #240, Ethereum execution layer core developers gathered to finalise Glamsterdam Devnet 7 guidelines and evaluate proposals under consideration for the next Hegota network upgrade. The session focused on finishing pending specification adjustments, reviewing implementation readiness, and resolving unsolved technical issues before the next testing phase, as Devnet 7 is slated to launch next week.

The call also covered changes to the deposit contract, updates to Ethereum's repricing initiatives, and several new EIP proposals for Hegota. By assessing Meta EIP housekeeping efforts and outlining the upcoming milestones before the public testnet, developers concluded the conversation.

Glamsterdam Updates

Devnet 7 Specifications Move Closer to Finalization

Before Devnet 7's scheduled debut next week, core developers analysed the remaining specification changes that need to be implemented. One of the key discussions was around EIP-8038, which requires an extra validation step before database slots may be accessed. Client teams agreed that this behavioural shift must be considered in the specs and supported the proposal. The changes will be integrated into the Devnet 7 standard set by merging a pull request.

Additionally, the group reviewed EIP-2780 changes. Instead of maintaining multiple pull requests covering similar functionality, developers choose to embrace Dragan's improved solution and close the older proposals. Another pull request that undid previous changes was also approved for merging after client teams decided on the optimal implementation approach.

The focus then shifted to Devnet 7 planning. The next Devnet is scheduled to open next week, according to developers, and Alpha 12 is anticipated to be released alongside it. Barnabas also requested a pull request to modify the consensus standards in order to complete the remaining adjustments before deployment.

Deposit Contract & Repricing Changes Continue to Progress

Updates to the deposit contract took up a significant portion of the meeting. Barnabas advocated lowering the target and maximum quantity of deposits handled every block, while Felix offered a technique allowing deposits to the building queue to be deactivated if required in future upgrades. The concept was approved for inclusion despite numerous developers' misgivings about the necessity for the added flexibility.

The group also addressed whether the deposit contract should be parameterised to simplify future hard forks. Developers eventually decided to stick with the more straightforward immutable contract architecture, despite several participants' claims that the extra complexity was superfluous. Felix's modifications will be incorporated into the combined implementation since they don't add any more runtime costs.

Maria then offered an update on Ethereum's current repricing efforts. She noted that the present settings utilised for EIP-8038 and EIP-2780 remain stable but are still considered provisional until every client meets the expected performance level of roughly 100 million gas per second, and further benchmark testing is completed utilising the Glamsterdam Devnet 6 setup.

New Timing Parameters Agreed for Devnet 7

Developers also discussed payload timing and proposer timeout options for Devnet 7. After weighing numerous options, the group opted to begin testing new timing targets of 3, 6, and 9 seconds throughout the various stages of block production.

Although several participants suggested reducing the first deadline to 2 seconds in the future, the current consensus is to start with 3 seconds and evaluate network performance before making any additional adjustments. In order to incorporate the additional parameters into the future Alpha 12 release, Barnabas asked for a pull request.

The discussion ended with a reminder that before the specifications are completely finished, the remaining repricing issues, such as intrinsic transaction gas adjustments, will be discussed during Monday's ACDT call.

Hegota Updates

New Privacy-Focused EIPs Enter Early Discussion

Developers began organising work for the Hegota upgrade after considering two new concepts from Thomas. EIP-8250 and EIP-8272 aim to provide trustless, censorship-resistant private transactions on Ethereum Layer 1 by improving how transaction privacy can be achieved without relying on trustworthy intermediates.

Developers are expected to continue analysing the solutions' technological architecture over the coming weeks after they were introduced as early finalists for Hegota. August 6 was specified as the deadline for presenting additional Hegota EIP proposals for consideration.

Additional Scaling Proposals Join the Hegota Pipeline

Tony submitted two more recommendations for possible inclusion in Hegota. While EIP-8146 suggests block access list sidecars to increase execution performance and facilitate future scalability improvements, EIP-7862 introduces delayed state roots.

Developers decided to continue evaluating these ideas along with additional Hegota candidates as implementation development advances rather than making choices about inclusion right away. Introducing the proposals and getting early input from client teams were the main topics of discussion.

MetaEIP Preparation Continues Ahead of Public Testing

As the meeting came to an end, Pooja provided an update on MetaEIP cooperation. She asked proposal authors to update the status of their EIPs to Review to ensure proper monitoring as they continue to prepare for the next public testnet.

Developers also discussed updating the MetaEIP with the latest implementation advancements so that client teams, researchers, and the wider Ethereum community can see which ideas are moving forward as Hegota planning picks up speed and Glamsterdam work gets closer to completion.

The Road Ahead

Developers are entering a vital stage of the Glamsterdam update, where the emphasis changes from agreeing on specs to evaluating implementations across clients, since Devnet 7 is scheduled to be released soon. The majority of crucial choices for the Devnet have already been made, however some technical details, such as repricing benchmarks and Beacon API changes, still need to be studied.

At the same time, planning for Hegota is picking up rapidly, with many fresh concepts entering early evaluation and August 6 deadline is set for additional submissions. The next several ACD sessions will be critical in finalizing Glamsterdam while setting the basic scope and goals for Ethereum's next network upgrade.
