Coinbase Users Report $1.2M Account Lock
Coinbase users report large crypto balances locked, while Cobie questions some claims and Coinbase outlines its account freeze policy.
Users of Coinbase are once again voicing concerns over restricted accounts after screenshots of massive crypto amounts supposedly unavailable through the exchange went viral. One user, Kuno, says that $1.2 million has been frozen for a year, while another claims that $860,000 has been unavailable for nine days.
Although crypto constraints may arise from security, legal requirements, or compliance, full fund freezes are extremely rare, according to Coinbase. The fact that the most recent claims are being questioned in public further complicates the dispute.
$1.2 Million Coinbase Account Claim
The most well-known complaint came from X user Kuno, who said on September 26 that Coinbase kept $1.2 million from him for a full year. He claimed to have opened over thirty support tickets, interacted with Coinbase via a Google Meet, and even had an in-person meeting with a representative.
Kuno threatened to disclose the Google Meet recording and take legal action if Coinbase didn't fix the issue within 24 hours.
Since then, the claim has drawn attention because of the length of the stated restriction and the size of the purported balance. Nevertheless, the accusation is still a claim made by the account holder rather than a loss that has been independently verified.
One year ago today, @Coinbase stole $1,200,000 from me.

I've opened 30+ support tickets, spoke to Coinbase on a Google Meet, and spoke to someone on the team in person.
Coinbase has 24 hours.
If this isn’t fixed, I’ll post the Google Meet recording and pursue legal action. https://t.co/qyGG5zITVn
Another User Reports $860K Restriction
PrimeEmpireDXB, an X user, is the subject of another instance that is making headlines online. According to PrimeEmpireDXB, $860K was locked for nine days.
The circulated account alleges that Coinbase rejected gambling records that were provided as proof of the money's source. That particular element is important since it seems that the issue is not only about a technical inability to access an account, but rather about the exchange's review of the source of the funds.
During security and compliance reviews, accounts may be subject to restrictions, according to Coinbase's own assistance documentation. According to its published instructions, consumers can still transfer cryptocurrency to an external wallet or withdraw money to a verified bank account in a variety of restriction or closure scenarios.
Hey @coinbase, it has been 9 days since you locked my account with $860k inside it. Your support is useless and does not understand that online casinos will not provide official documents of my gambling activities to you as proof of source of wealth. Can we reach an agreement to… pic.twitter.com/jSVfAZPgVD

Coinbase Says Full Freezes Are Rare
Coinbase distinguishes between an actual freezing of customer funds and an account restriction.
Customers may still be able to send and receive crypto or cash out to a linked verified bank account, but buying and selling can be stopped, according to its current help page. Remaining crypto can typically be transferred to an external wallet when an account is closed, and accessible funds can be taken out to a validated bank account.
A total freeze is said to be highly unusual. According to Coinbase, it may restrict money if a court or other authority orders it or if sanctions laws mandate that assets be frozen.
Because of this disparity, screenshots showing trade constraints do not necessarily indicate that a user's entire balance has been seized or made permanently inaccessible.
Cobie Questions Claims as Scam Concerns Emerge
The discussion took a different turn when cryptocurrency expert Cobie stated that he was unable to find an account that fit one of the characteristics and requested that the impacted person get in touch with him so that he might try to assist in resolving the issue.
Cobie claimed in a subsequent post that he had investigated the account further and had not received a response to Coinbase's outreach for more than six months. He added that he had not received a response from the person in his direct messages. Cobie later noted that the incident was being used to advertise a token, characterising it as appearing to be a fake or fraudulent report intended to increase interaction.
Looked into the account further and there is no response to any outreach by CB to the user over the last 6+ months, as well as no response to my DMs.
— Cobie (@cobie) September 28, 2026
Now this “situation” is being used to promote a shitcoin, so looks basically to be an entirely fake/scam report/engagement farm.
His remarks do not prove that all Coinbase lockup claims are false. They particularly raise questions about the case he looked into and show why the exact allegations that are making headlines on X still require verification.
A different document addresses the more general issue of account restrictions. According to Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, the company had cut unnecessary restrictions by 82% in June 2025. Additionally, Coinbase has previously stated that it is enhancing its limitation systems through machine learning, compliance automation, and other changes to account reviews.
Therefore, there are two distinct questions in the current disagreement. The precise claims involving $1.2 million and $860,000 require proof beyond pictures and social media posts before the circumstances can be proven, even though Coinbase has publicly disclosed protocols for account restrictions.
