Apply Now →US traders now have an additional way to take leveraged positions on the S&P 500 due to the launch of US500 Perps on Coinbase's regulated derivatives platform. Introduced on August 17, 2026, the contract offers up to 20x leverage and perpetual-style exposure to the bigger US large-cap market. The move broadens Coinbase's trading options beyond cryptocurrencies and into traditional markets by enabling users to trade the index without actually owning individual equities.
Coinbase Brings S&P 500 Exposure to Perps
By tracking the S&P 500, the new US500 Perps contract provides traders with a single perpetual-style futures product that allows them to trade the performance of the US large-cap equities market. Traders might take a position on the larger index instead of picking particular companies, as opposed to purchasing individual shares.
Coinbase's regulated derivatives marketplace, Coinbase Derivatives, launched the contract on August 17. The product provides US traders with access to the S&P 500 through a trading framework that is now strongly linked to cryptocurrency markets.

Up to 20x Leverage Without an Expiry Date
With up to 20x leverage available in US500 Perps, traders can manage significantly greater index exposure in relation to the margin they post. Additionally, because the contract is perpetual-style, traders are not required to close or roll their positions at a set period due to its traditional expiration date.
Rather, the contract's price is kept in line with the underlying S&P 500 by periodic funding rates. Traders can keep their holdings without having to deal with a regular futures expiry due to this structure.
24/7 Trading Meets Traditional Markets
Additionally, what traders can access via a crypto-native trading platform is altered by Coinbase's action. The US500 contract enables traders to participate without actually buying or holding the individual equities represented in the S&P 500 while offering perpetual-style exposure to the entire US large-cap economy.
By combining tools that traders are accustomed to from cryptocurrency derivatives with exposure to a significant traditional equities benchmark, the launch furthers Coinbase's efforts toward wider market access. According to Coinbase Markets, the product offers US traders perpetual-style exposure to the whole US large-cap economy.
That also extends the 24/7 trading approach associated with Coinbase’s derivatives products. Rather than limiting exposure to conventional stock-market hours, the contract brings the index into a trading environment built around continuous access.

Coinbase’s Broader Push Beyond Crypto
The US500 launch complements Coinbase's broader derivatives business expansion. Before the S&P 500 contract was added, the exchange had already launched perpetual-style products linked to equity indexes, such as thematic exposure and the Nasdaq-100. Using the same derivatives architecture, the most recent expansion exposes traders to a significantly larger portion of US equities.
An important step in Coinbase's endeavour to integrate traditional financial markets into its trading ecosystem, CEO Brian Armstrong has positioned the move around providing customers with perpetual-style exposure to the US large-cap economy.

In addition to the US500 debut, the new listing of Cluster Protocol ($CP) was mentioned in the community. The $CP listing was another development that attracted attention from Coinbase's crypto-focused community around the same time, even though it is distinct from the S&P 500 derivatives debut.
