Before Agents Week, Cloudflare launched Cloudflare Wallets, a new identity and payment system created especially for AI agents, as a significant addition to their AI ecosystem. The platform, which was launched on August 4, lets users store stablecoins, accept payments, buy online services, and give AI agents restricted spending power. In addition to wallets, Cloudflare is launching virtual wallets and human-readable wallet handles in an effort to do away with the main barriers preventing AI agents from autonomously finding, evaluating, and paying for digital services.

Cloudflare Wallets Solve Two Major Problems for AI Agents

Cloudflare believes that because the onboarding process is still designed for humans, AI bots encounter major difficulties when attempting to access new APIs. Before they can even test an API, agents frequently have to visit login pages, wait for someone to add a payment method, generate API keys, and perform a number of manual procedures. These obstacles often require agents to return the entire process to humans.

According to Cloudflare, this friction arises from AI agents' lack of two crucial features, i.e., a native payment method and a stable identification that businesses can use. Without these, agents find it difficult to acquire APIs, register for services, or evaluate different providers, which restricts the expansion of agentic commerce.

Cloudflare introduced Cloudflare Wallets as a solution. A distinct Cloudflare Wallet handle, a human-readable username that acts as a consistent identity when engaging with merchants, is now available to all qualified accounts. These wallets will soon enable users to make direct payments using stablecoins for web services, digital content, and APIs.

During Agents Week, the announcement immediately attracted notice. While early adopters shared the platform's recognisable orange wallet cards online as they claimed unique usernames, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince and product lead Will Papper each reserved their own wallet handles.

Monetization Gateway, x402, & Virtual Wallets Power Agent Payments

The recently launched Monetisation Gateway, which allows websites and apps to accept micropayments using the x402 protocol, is tightly linked with Cloudflare Wallets. By attaching payments directly to HTTP requests rather than depending on conventional payment methods, x402 enables developers to charge modest fees for AI inference, datasets, premium content, API calls, and other digital services.

Users must have a Cloudflare Wallet that can store stablecoins, transmit and receive money, and communicate with x402-compatible endpoints in order to be a part of this ecosystem.

Virtual wallets are one of the platform's main features. Each human-controlled Account Wallet can generate several Virtual Wallets for AI agents. Instead of having separate balances, these wallets use API keys to function and are given spending power by the Account Wallet.

Before an agent starts making purchases, Cloudflare users can set up multiple spending guardrails. In order to ensure that agents stay within predetermined budgets while freely exploring compatible services, owners can set maximum transaction limits, merchant allow lists, and spending limitations.

Spending Controls Let AI Agents Explore More APIs Safely

According to Cloudflare, spending caps actually increase the freedom of AI agents rather than limiting them. An agent with a modest budget can assess dozens or even hundreds of services without constantly requesting human approval because many APIs only cost a few cents to test.

For instance, a user can set a $10 spending cap for a virtual wallet. An AI agent might use that budget to compare several APIs with very little financial risk. This balance between risk management and autonomy, according to Cloudflare, promotes broader experimentation without risking significant sums of money.

Companies can use the same model as well. An account wallet might be funded by a company, and virtual wallets for staff members or AI helpers could be created automatically. For example, each employee might be given a weekly budget of $100 for software services or AI inference. An administrator with the authority to oversee the Account Wallet may be asked to manually override a Virtual Wallet if it reaches its limit.

Additionally, Cloudflare intends to identify unusual expenditure. Administrators can examine transactions, sanction extra money when necessary, or rely on current spending limitations to stop unintentional overspending if an agent spends more than anticipated. According to the firm, qualifying users will be able to self-fund their wallets with stablecoins in addition to simple fiat on-ramps and off-ramps in supported locations.

cloudflare.pay Gives AI Agents a Persistent Identity

Cloudflare is launching cloudflare.pay, an identity layer created especially for AI agents, in addition to payments. Agents can identify themselves as representatives of a Cloudflare account rather than being anonymous.

An organisation might designate an identity like research, for instance, one of its AI agents, for example, cloudflare.pay. It would be simpler to provide free trials, promotional credits, or trusted access that would otherwise be challenging to grant to anonymous bots if merchants working with that agent knew right away that it belonged to a specific company.

Cloudflare emphasises that using this identity scheme is completely voluntary. While retailers are allowed to favour contacts with confirmed agents or keep accepting unidentified ones, agents have the option of disclosing their identities.

The company compares this concept with how VPN users are now handled by websites. Although they would require further authentication before being granted specific perks, anonymous visitors are not inherently regarded as unreliable. By connecting cryptographic key pairs to human-readable Cloudflare Wallet handles, Cloudflare will expand on Web Bot Auth and make agent identities easier to identify without creating a completely new identity system.

Cloudflare compares this approach to how URLs make numerical IP addresses easier to use through the Domain Name System (DNS). Cloudflare intends to implement comparable specs while maintaining its own lightweight and user-friendly methodology as standards continue to develop through the x402 Foundation.
