Telegram is preparing for one of its largest cryptocurrency launches yet. A native, non-custodial Gram Wallet will be made available to all Telegram users this summer, according to Pavel Durov, founder and CEO. The wallet is anticipated to reach over a billion users globally and will provide quick, no-cost cryptocurrency transactions. The announcement comes just weeks after Telegram rebranded Toncoin to GRAM, marking another major step in the company's renewed push to make cryptocurrency a core part of its ecosystem.

Telegram to Launch Native Gram Wallet This Summer

From his official X account, Pavel Durov announced the news and described it as the "largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in human history." Durov claims that the Gram Wallet will be integrated straight into Telegram, enabling users to access cryptocurrency capabilities without needing to install additional software.

Due to the wallet's non-custodial nature, users will be in complete control of their digital assets and private keys rather than having to rely on Telegram or another third party to retain their money. This strategy is in line with the more general idea of self-custody, which maintains users as the exclusive proprietors of their cryptocurrency.

Instantaneous, fee-free digital currency transfers are another standout feature. According to Durov, the wallet would eliminate a lot of the hassle that comes with blockchain payments by enabling users to send digital assets just like they would message on Telegram.

Telegram has stated that the deployment will start this summer, but it hasn't yet disclosed a comprehensive launch plan or indicated which nations will get the feature first.

How the Gram Wallet Fits Into Telegram's Crypto Vision?

The announcement of the wallet comes after a number of significant developments in Telegram's blockchain ecosystem. The company announced last month that Telegram is renaming Toncoin to GRAM, returning to the name Durov had initially intended for the project in 2018.

In June, the community voted overwhelmingly to rename Toncoin back to GRAM, reviving the original name Durov envisioned in 2018. The newly announced wallet rollout marks the next milestone in his broader "Make TON Great Again" (MTONGA) vision.

Another big change coincided with the rebranding. As the ecosystem's principal steward and major validator, Telegram took over from the TON Foundation, allowing the business a more direct voice in how the network develops.

Telegram users already have access to Wallet in Telegram, formerly known as TON Wallet, even if this week's announcement concentrates on the new native wallet. The service, which currently provides self-custodial storage and digital asset trading, announced having over 150 million registered customers earlier this year.

It seems that the new Gram Wallet is part of a larger project. It will become a native feature accessible throughout the messaging platform rather than remaining as a stand-alone wallet service inside Telegram, greatly increasing its potential reach.

Telegram's Crypto Comeback Comes Full Circle

Telegram's crypto journey hasn't been easy. In 2018, the company unveiled The Open Network (TON) and announced plans to create GRAM, a cryptocurrency. However, once the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission claimed that Telegram's token sales were illegal under U.S. securities regulations, the project encountered legal difficulties.

In the end, the legal dispute compelled Telegram to abandon the original TONNE project and discontinue selling GRAM tokens. Before developing into the current TON network, the ecosystem remained under autonomous community development throughout time.

Telegram is currently actively reestablishing itself in the cryptocurrency market. The company is once again establishing blockchain as a key component of its long-term strategy, as shown by the recent rebranding of GRAM, increased participation in the ecosystem, and the introduction of a native wallet.

Further strengthening Telegram's blockchain strategy, the TON Foundation is backing the Gram Wallet's launch in the United States while continuing to support development on The Open Network (TON).

Telegram has long been seen as one of the most promising platforms for introducing mainstream audiences to digital assets because of its popularity among cryptocurrency users. Without needing users to learn completely new software, a wallet that is directly incorporated into an app that is used by over 1 billion people might greatly increase access to self-custody.

What Telegram Has Confirmed So Far?

As of right now, Telegram has confirmed that its native Gram Wallet will launch this summer and eventually be accessible to over 1 billion users across all of its apps. Through a non-custodial structure, the wallet will enable instantaneous, fee-free transfers of cryptocurrency while granting users total control over their own private assets.

But a number of elements are still unclear. Telegram has not yet released technical documentation, explained the security architecture of the wallet, disclosed which cryptocurrencies will be supported, or provided a launch date for each country. Additionally, it has not made clear whether the launch would be accompanied by new blockchain features.
