Bitcoin ETFs Lose $679M as Wintermute Warns
Wintermute warns of weakening crypto capital flows as Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs see heavy outflows, with Treasury yields and the $82,500 Bitcoin level in focus.
Wintermute has warned that the cryptocurrency market is losing capital flow support due to large withdrawals from Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds. In its October 12, 2026 market update, the cryptocurrency trading organization noticed a growing disparity between digital assets and stocks, however profit projections continue to support investor confidence.
During the previous week, Ethereum fell 7.0% and Bitcoin fell 3.2%. A long-term rebound, according to Wintermute, requires constant long-term Treasury yields and higher demand for spot cryptocurrency ETFs.
Bitcoin & Ethereum ETFs Record $1.22 Billion in Outflows
Last week, US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a net outflow of $679 million, which was their highest weekly outflow since late June. During the same time period, withdrawals of $542 million were made from Ethereum ETFs. According to the data in Wintermute's market update, the funds collectively lost almost $1.22 billion in net capital.
The withdrawals came at the same time as Bitcoin dropped 3.2% on a weekly basis and Ethereum dropped more sharply by 7.0%. According to Wintermute, the sources of market support for stocks and cryptocurrencies differ from one another. Expectations of corporate profits growth continue to boost equities, while cryptocurrencies are now more reliant on new investment coming into the market.
The company highlighted the S&P 500's persistence, supported by expectations that third-quarter profits growth would continue to be robust. In contrast, cryptocurrency assets are finding it difficult to sustain their momentum as ETF investors take their money out.
These numbers show that demand for significant investment products has decreased, making Bitcoin and Ethereum more vulnerable to pressure to sell until flows improve.
Wintermute Says Treasury Yields Must Stabilize for Recovery
Wintermute found two prerequisites for a long-term bitcoin rebound. Spot Ethereum and Bitcoin ETF inflows must resume, and long-term US Treasury yields must level down.
The company observed that the market outlook is still influenced by assumptions regarding US monetary policy. Treasury yields may stay high as Federal Reserve officials lean toward raising interest rates once again, which would restrict the circumstances for a recovery in risk-sensitive assets.
According to Wintermute, as long as these circumstances continue, Bitcoin is still susceptible to volatility and additional declines. A brief price increase is not viewed by the company as adequate proof that the state of the market has improved. Rather, it seeks stability in longer-term bond yields and increased demand for ETFs.
This combination matters to Wintermute’s outlook because a price recovery without renewed capital inflows could struggle to hold its gains.

Bitcoin Faces $82,500 Resistance as Treasury Yield Risk Grows
Wintermute may become more wary of the bitcoin market as a result of two warning levels that it has observed. The first is that the yield on the US 30-year Treasury has risen above the September 30 level of 5.64%. The second is that Bitcoin keeps falling short of $82,500.
For tracking the company's market forecast, these criteria offer precise references. While recurrent rejection near $82,500 would imply that Bitcoin is having trouble regaining its upward momentum, an increase in long-term yields over the specified level would bolster worries about the state of the economy.
Wintermute's optimistic long-term view has not been abandoned. It does, however, think that the current market climate is still dangerous until bond yields and capital flows improve. Its assessment places particular emphasis on whether Bitcoin can move beyond the identified price level rather than repeatedly facing resistance.
Wintermute Urges Caution on Low Quality Altcoins
Additionally, while the overall market lacks consistent capital flow support, Wintermute has cautioned traders against following rallies in lower-quality altcoins.
The caution reflects the company's belief that while demand for Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs is still low, short-term increases in smaller cryptocurrency assets might not be sustained. The market may continue to be vulnerable to significant price fluctuations in the absence of new inflows and more steady Treasury yields.
Wintermute is still optimistic about the long-term cryptocurrency cycle, but its short-term prospects are dependent on quantifiable shifts in the market. For indications that the current pressure is lessening, investors will be keeping an eye on ETF flow statistics, long-term Treasury yields, and Bitcoin's efforts to break $82,500.
