“Code-A-Thon” : DC Blockchain Summit 2017

First Federal sponsored “Code-A-Thon” for Blockchain in Healthcare was organized in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS), Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) in DC Blockchain Summit 2017. The contestants (both in-house and online) were challenged to create blockchain and distributed ledger technology-based applications and solutions for the healthcare industry — all within a single, 24-hour period.

The Chamber of Digital Commerce, along with Georgetown University's Center for Financial Markets and Policy, hosted their second annual gathering featuring the best and brightest in industry and government from around the globe at Washington, DC on March 15-16, 2017.

The program included discussions from the people, companies and government leaders who are driving digital assets, blockchain and distributed ledger technologies forward. Both in-house and remote participants were allocated some time to present their presentation. Companies like Microsoft, Hyperledger, Gem, Hashed Health and USPS also send representatives for presentation and Q&A on the tools and technologies offered by them to use for blockchain development. Accenture, Deloitte, IBM, Microsoft were the major sponsors. Few international organization and govt. organization like “An initiative by The Govt. of Andhra Pradesh”, “FINTECH Valley, Vizag” were also listed as the sponsors for the event.

As per Ms. Ryan from ONC, there was a white paper contest followed by two-day workshop held by the Dept. of Health and Human Services in Sep 26-27, 2016. They received about 77 white papers.

It was the best response received ever. So, this time we decided to move from White paper status to actual work status”, said Jason Brett (Chamber of Digital Commerce).

The in-house participants, representative of Tata Consultancy Services, Nucleus Healthcare, MedTek MD and others were excited about this Code-A-Thon. They discussed about the need and advantage of usage of Smart Contract and Blockchain in healthcare industry. Medical record need privacy as well as sharing, blockchain creates a model to share medical record in decentralized way. It will solve the problem of scalability and ease of access. “Blockchain will dramatically reduce the cost, increase speed and provide security”, said the representative of Nucleus Healthcare. Blockchain is highly secured database. Moving Information System on blockchain will make it more secure as no one owns that. So, manipulation is flipped around because of decentralization.
