Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol will be integrated with the Hong Kong Gold Exchange to facilitate the exchange of its gold-backed XGZ token across several blockchain networks. GoldZip, the exchange's digital gold project, and blockchain infrastructure supplier Midas Labs are involved in the integration, which was announced on October 27, 2026.

Every XGZ token is equivalent to one gram of 99.99% pure gold. By integrating established gold trading infrastructure with blockchain-based marketplaces, the move seeks to expand the token's reach beyond Ethereum.

Chainlink's CCIP is designed to facilitate digital asset transfers across blockchain networks. Rather than limiting its use to Ethereum, GoldZip aims to make XGZ transferable across supported chains through a collaboration with Midas Labs. For institutional asset issuers, Chainlink's CCIP 2.0 offers further verification choices and compliance capabilities.

The announcement doesn't say whether other networks will support XGZ first or when holders would be able to use cross-chain transfers. The speed at which users can take advantage of the proposed expansion will depend on those specifics.

XGZ Gold Token Has a Physical Redemption Limit

In December 2025, GoldZip introduced XGZ, which is currently exchanged on Ethereum via Uniswap and other sites. One gram of 99.99% pure gold kept in accredited vaults is represented by each token. Users can retain and transfer amounts under one gram because the token is split into extremely small fractions.

However, there is a major limitation to physical redemption. To redeem a real gold bar weighing one kilogram, eligible holders must accrue at least 1,000 XGZ. Identity and anti-money laundering compliance checks are also necessary for redemption. Smaller holders can trade fractional gold exposure online due to this threshold, but they are unable to freely exchange their small amounts for physical bars under the regular redemption terms.

Traditional Gold Markets Move Further Into Blockchain

The integration links blockchain-based asset transactions with the Hong Kong Gold Exchange's well-established precious metals industry. Chainlink provides the cross-chain protocol, GoldZip provides the gold-backed currency, and Midas Labs supports its tokenisation infrastructure.

The project is an attempt to increase the accessibility of digital assets connected to gold across multiple blockchain networks. The supported networks, the rollout schedule, and the redemption options accessible to holders will determine its practical impact.

Although XGZ has a direct connection to a tangible asset because of the physical gold backing, smaller users still need to take the minimum redemption criteria into account.
