$90K Crypto Loss After Chrome Extension Hack
Crypto creator Bold loses around $90K after malware compromised Chrome extensions, stealing seed phrases and passwords and draining funds to Ethereum and Zcash.
A widespread attack that targeted Chrome browser extensions caused the well-known cryptocurrency creator Bold to lose about $90K. The money was moved to Ethereum and Zcash accounts after the attackers obtained passwords and seed phrases. Since then, Bold, who is well-known for his hand-drawn memes, has highlighted a number of steps he plans to take in the wake of the incident, including using hardware wallets and storing less cryptocurrency in hot wallets, and has warned other users about the risks associated with synced browser extensions.
Malware Compromised Browser Extensions
Bold's Chrome browser extensions were hacked in the event, allowing the malware to gain access to private data, including passwords and seed phrases. The stolen cryptocurrency was then transferred to Ethereum and Zcash accounts after the attackers used those credentials to sweep money.
Bold suffered losses from the incident of about $90,000. He claimed that in addition to the financial harm, the incident had a psychological impact on him, demonstrating how drastically the attack has altered his plans for handling cryptocurrency.
In the crypto world, Bold is especially well-known for his hand-drawn memes, which have amassed a sizable fan base. In the wake of the attack, he issued a warning about a danger that users can miss when browser extensions sync between devices.
Bold Plans to Keep Less Crypto On-Chain
Following the incident, Bold stated that his view on cryptocurrency would be significantly changed. He stated that he aims to convert whatever money he earns straight into fiat and that he will no longer store anything on-chain personally.
Bold joked that he is going to "become a boomer" and dollar-cost average into Bitcoin ETFs instead, indicating that he is thinking of taking a much more conventional approach to investing.
His remarks demonstrate the extent to which the incident has undermined his trust in using online wallets to store valuables. Bold stated that he wants to completely minimise his exposure to on-chain funds rather than just replace the flawed system.
For me personally moving forward I’m actually going to keep nothing on chain, this incident hasn’t just affected me heavily financially, but mentally too, so if I make any money it’s coming straight off and into fiat.

Hardware Wallets & Strong Passwords Recommended
Bold also discussed several security precautions that he thinks can assist others to stay away from a similar circumstance. Hardware wallets, the Brave browser, and relying on robust password managers like 1Password or Proton were some of his suggestions.
Additionally, he suggested that users avoid exposing bigger holdings to browser-based environments by keeping only a small amount of money in hot wallets. These suggestions were mirrored by community members, some of whom emphasised the use of passwords longer than 20 characters.
After realising the extent of the loss, the community's reaction was mostly positive, with people expressing compassion and emphasising the need for more robust security procedures.
Malicious Extensions Are Becoming a Wider Concern
Additionally, community members noted that Bold's experience seems to fit a larger trend of malicious browser extensions that target cryptocurrency users. Similar attacks have impacted thousands of users in other blockchain ecosystems, according to the debate.
Malicious extensions are said to target users across EVM-compatible chains in addition to Solana, indicating that the problem is not exclusive to one network. Warnings regarding what users permit browser extensions to access have gained more weight as a result of this wider trend, especially when wallets, seed phrases, and passwords are involved.
For Bold, the $90K loss has led to a major rethink of how he holds crypto. His decision to move funds into fiat, consider Bitcoin ETFs, use hardware wallets and minimise hot-wallet balances reflects the practical changes he says he will make after the attack.
