Ethereum 2035: Vitalik’s Vision for the Next Decade

Vitalik shares his 10-year vision for Ethereum, highlighting scaling, privacy, governance & experimentation as it evolves from crypto to global infra.

Ethereum 2035: Vitalik’s Vision for the Next Decade

Ethereum has just turned ten, marking a decade of innovation, community resilience & technological advancement. At the 10 Years of Ethereum Livestream, Vitalik Buterin outlined his vision for the next decade, emphasizing scaling, privacy, governance & the need to preserve Ethereum’s experimental culture. His roadmap envisions a world where Ethereum transitions from powering crypto apps to becoming critical global infrastructure.

From Genesis Block to Global Force

Ethereum began in 2015 as an ambitious experiment to build a “world computer” for smart contracts. Today, it secures more than $230 billion across its L1 & L2 networks, facilitates billions of transactions, and powers thousands of decentralized apps.

One of Ethereum’s biggest priorities for the next decade is scaling. Buterin highlighted the rollup-centric roadmap, where Layer-2 solutions help Ethereum handle millions of users while maintaining decentralization. Already securing tens of billions in value, rollups are key to Ethereum’s next phase of growth. The challenge is ensuring Ethereum stays open, permissionless & censorship-resistant even as adoption soars.

Vitalik Buterin reinforced Ethereum’s core values:

“Ethereum must remain a global, permissionless platform. It has to be censorship-resistant. It can’t go down. It must be programmable so people can keep building freely.”

Privacy is not optional but it is a prerequisite for mainstream adoption. Just as banking apps assume confidentiality, Ethereum applications must evolve to shield balances, identities & interactions from public exposure. The next decade must embed privacy-preserving technologies at the protocol & application layers.

Governance Through Markets

Ethereum’s future, according to Buterin, includes governance powered by markets. Prediction & decision markets, once niche, are gaining real traction with platforms like Polymarket. DAOs, public goods funding & even governments could adopt such mechanisms to align incentives and improve decision-making.

Stablecoins already demonstrate crypto’s product-market fit, but future use cases include digital identity systems, decentralized fundraising (e.g., Ukraine DAO), & new governance models. The ultimate goal is for Ethereum to secure trillions of dollars on-chain while supporting critical societal functions.

Keeping the Experimental Spirit Alive

For Buterin, Ethereum’s cultural DNA is just as important as its technology. He urged the community to preserve its spirit of open experimentation: “Let’s just try all the things & see what works.” Even as Ethereum integrates with mainstream finance & governments, it must remain a playground for innovationwhere bold ideas are tested, refined, and sometimes reborn after initial failure.

Vitalik Buterin emphasized Ethereum’s experimental nature:

“One of the reasons why we started Ethereum was to build a free space for all kinds of creation & innovation. If we build a general-purpose platform, we’ll see applications & ideas we hadn’t even imagined.”

He pointed out that some ideas in the whitepaper (like DeFi, ENS) materialized, while surprises like NFTs emerged unexpectedly.

Conclusion

Vitalik Buterin’s roadmap for Ethereum’s next decade is ambitious yet grounded in its history: transform the impossible into the inevitable. With scaling solutions, privacy-first design, governance via markets, and real-world impact, Ethereum aims to evolve from a crypto network into global digital infrastructure. The challenge lies in balancing maturity with experimentation—ensuring Ethereum remains resilient, permissionless & truly global as it shapes the future of finance, governance & digital society.
