TL;DR

Regarding Gray Glacier

The Gray Glacier went well. Block times are back down to 13 sec on the network.
There were two small miners who kept mining on the old chain for ~10 blocks. One was Exa Pool and the other was anonymous. Both of them were contacted and now they've mined blocks on the upgraded chain.

An issue in during the Sepolia merge

A small percentage of validators failed to participate in Sepolia through the Merge due to missing keys.
Most of the issues from the Merge on Sepolia were due to incorrect client configurations.

Ropsten will not be updated with a fork ID given that this testnet will be deprecated shortly after the Merge activates on mainnet. As a reminder, the only two testnets devs will maintain after mainnet Merge will be Sepolia and Goerli.

Besu hit a database-related issue which caused some nodes to have a re-sync. This happened because some operators did a TTD override twice by accident, while actually running the correct merge software. A fix to the problem has already been carried out and is a part of their latest release.

Goerli testnet

Goerli will be the third and final testnet to undergo the Merge before the mainnet. The goal is to deploy mainnet ready code or at least as close to mainnet ready code as possible on Goerli. Alongside the client releases for Goerli, client teams are also planning a new release to update Sepolia nodes with a new fork ID.

Regarding Erigon and Nethermind

Erigon wants to get more sync testing done, especially with regards to how the EL interacts with the CL checkpoint sync.

Nethermind said they had a few bugs to fix and hive tests to still look into. Besu had one hive test left, and a few non-merge related issues.

Flashbot and MEV boost

Flashbots is a research and development organization working on mitigating the negative externalities of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) extraction techniques and avoiding the existential risks MEV could cause to stateful blockchains like Ethereum. Their primary goal is to enable a permissionless, transparent, and fair ecosystem for MEV extraction. This falls under three goals:

  • Bringing Transparency to MEV Activity
  • Democratizing Access to MEV Revenue
  • Enabling Fair Redistribution of MEV Revenue.

MEV Boost is the software built by Flashbots in collaboration with CL client teams for validators to be able to earn MEV post merge from user transactions in a transparent and permission less way.

The softwares is now ready for testing by users, searchers, validators, really anyone and everyone, in two CL clients, Prysm and Teku.
Next week Flashbots will release a blog post about MEV Boost and the areas of possible conflicts of interest and vulnerabilities that exist with the software.
