Ethereum Developers Announce "The Weld" Repository Merger

The Ethereum core development community has announced The Weld, a major initiative to merge ethereum/execution-spec-tests (EEST) into ethereum/execution-specs (EELS) by Q4 2025. This move is expected to streamline workflows, remove redundancies, and accelerate Ethereum’s testing and specification processes.

Background & Motivation

Ethereum’s testing ecosystem has historically relied on two separate repositories , i.e., EEST and EELS which are connected through a Resolver tool. While this setup worked, it often created friction by leading to version mismatches, complicated debugging, and slower integration cycles.

The Weld initiative was introduced to solve these issues by consolidating both repositories into a single home, ensuring tighter integration between specifications and testing.

Transition Plan

The migration is scheduled for Q4 2025 and will be carefully managed to minimize disruption. Developers will begin by merging or closing all pending pull requests in EEST.

Once this is complete, there will be a short freeze perio lasting between 12 to 48 hours during which coding standards will be aligned and CI workflows enabled in the new unified setup. After the freeze, all testing and specification work will move to EELS, making it the single source of truth for developers.

Impact on Developers

The transition has been designed to be as seamless as possible. Spec developers will continue their work as usual, opening pull requests in the EELS repository.

Test developers will gradually shift their contributions into the merged structure without losing functionality. For client developers, nothing changes in terms of releases and availability, which means ongoing work can continue uninterrupted even as the ecosystem transitions behind the scenes.

Key Benefits

By consolidating everything under one roof, The Weld simplifies workflows and enhances the developer experience. Instead of juggling two repositories and a Resolver tool, developers will be able to directly add tests, run coverage reports, and debug from within a single environment.

This tighter integration creates a cleaner, faster, and more intuitive development process that reduces friction and improves efficiency across Ethereum’s execution layer ecosystem. The Weld represents a turning point for Ethereum’s development infrastructure.

By unifying specifications and tests, the initiative reduces complexity while opening the door for more reliable and collaborative development. It is more than just a code merger as it is a step toward building a stronger, more resilient Ethereum ecosystem for years to come.
