The world loves a good debate, and Georgios Konstantopoulos kicked off a big one on Twitter by asking: "What should we NOT build in 2025?"

Yup, instead of focusing on what cool stuff to make, this question flipped the script. And oh boy, the replies? Spicy. Let’s break it down.

Enough With the Copy-Paste EVM L2s

First up, we’ve got sassal.eth calling out the endless stream of generic Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) Layer 2s. His point?

"Deploying yet another generalized EVM L2 is useless at best and a borderline grift at worst."

Translation: Stop making the same Layer 2 blockchain over and over. We already have enough, and it’s not really helping anymore. Hayden Adams chimed in, saying it’s like a company bragging about making servers for apps. Cool... but meh.

What should we do instead? Focus on apps that solve real problems, not more empty chains.

Based Rollups? Nah, Hard Pass

Mark Tyneway wasn’t holding back either. He slammed “based rollups” for putting apps at the mercy of shady third parties. These rollups make it easier for bad actors to mess with users (hello, MEV supply chain risks).

His advice? Own your tech stack from top to bottom and respect your users’ rights. No shortcuts.

Don’t Overload Ethereum’s Brain

Potuz dropped some knowledge about Ethereum’s consensus layer. Apparently, if you overload it with random tasks, things can get messy.

"Solutions that tap into L1 validators for off-protocol duties weaken incentives and can even break consensus."

In plain English: Don’t mess with the foundation that keeps Ethereum running smoothly. Let it do its thing without piling on unnecessary junk.

Let’s Not Make These Either

A few other gems from the conversation:

  • General-purpose rollups: We don’t need another one. Seriously. (tweet)
  • Another DEX: We have enough decentralized exchanges. Build something else. (tweet)
  • Super-niche wallets: Someone mentioned not needing an ultra-secure Ethereum wallet using Tor because, guess what, it already exists and no one’s lining up to make another. (tweet)

What’s the Big Picture Here?

This whole debate isn’t just about trashing certain ideas. The real takeaway? Stop building for the sake of building. Put your time and energy into making things that matter, things that people actually need.

Hayden Adams put it perfectly:

"The key is way more industry focus on apps and less on chains."

Apps solve problems. Chains? Not so much if they’re all the same.

What Do YOU Think?

Twitter’s still buzzing about this, and there’s plenty more to discuss. So, what do you think we should not build in 2025? Hit up Twitter, tag your favorite techies, and keep the conversation going.

Let’s make 2025 the year of smart, purposeful innovation—not just another year of “same old, same old.”
