ENS or Ethereum Name Service turns 5 years old and along with that it also crossed 1 million registered names which is a great achievement for the company. ENS is a DNS (Domain Name Service) of the Web 3 ecosystem.

What is DNS system?

Domain Name Systems started to bridge the gap between complex computer language which forms an ip address and the normal language which is easily understandable to humans by linking those complex alphanumeric addresses to much simpler words called as domain names which are selected by the owner of the address itself. The example of a domain name is www.google.com and the example of IP address is 192.168.1.1.

Why ENS?

If you have ever done or seen any transaction happening on the blockchain network you must have seen the term called a ‘public key‘ popping up frequently. A public key is sharable and can be shared to the sender in order to receive the crypto or do any transaction on the network it's just like sharing your account details to send or receive money but the thing is that public key is a long string of alphanumeric characters which are quite difficult to remember so here comes the ENS protocol which converts those characters to a short name of your choice.

For example: Any wallet address like this 0x7c300639A7d..... can be converted to etherworld.eth or anything like that. Now if someone wants to send some tokens to above address, he/she can directly type etherworld.eth instead of typing the whole wallet and it will automatically show the public key and hence ENS makes transactions much easier.

Nick Johnson and Alex van de Sande, initially developed the ENS and now it is actually open sourced for anybody to view and review the code.

1 Million Registered Names

ENS has seen a major hike in the registrations mainly since last year. Last year they had 242k names and 206 integrations which rose to over 900k and 500 integrations today.
