A sharp exchange on X has reignited a deeper philosophical debate at the intersection of Ethereum & artificial intelligence. The conversation began when Sigil (@0xSigil) published a bold claim. He said he had built “the first AI that earns its existence, self-improves, and replicates without a human.”
He framed this as the beginning of WEB 4.0 and described it as the birth of superintelligent life. The idea was not simply about better software. It was about autonomous digital entities. AI systems that can operate economically, sustain themselves, modify their own code, and interact with the world without direct human oversight.
Vitalik Buterin responded quickly. “Bro, this is wrong.”

The Web4 Claim: Autonomous Superintelligence
Sigil’s post described an AI system capable of earning its own resources, improving itself, and replicating without human permission. He also referenced write access to the world, suggesting a shift from AI as advisory software to AI as an active economic participant.
The framing aligns with a broader narrative emerging across the crypto ecosystem. AI agents with wallets. Autonomous on-chain identities. Smart contracts deployed by non-human actors. Systems that persist and operate independently of any single operator.
This direction is not entirely new. EtherWorld previously reported on the growing financial and infrastructural commitment toward AI integration in crypto markets, including the significant $70M shift from Crypto.com to AI.com, which signaled serious capital movement into the AI domain.
Sigil’s Web4 framing attempts to push that narrative further. If Web1 gave us static pages, Web2 gave us social coordination, and Web3 gave us programmable ownership, then Web4 in this vision introduces autonomous digital life.
Vitalik’s Central Concern: Feedback Distance
Vitalik’s response centered on what he called the feedback distance between humans and AIs. The longer the feedback loop between human values and AI decision-making, the greater the risk that systems optimize for the wrong objectives. When AI systems operate with limited human oversight, accumulate resources, and make decisions autonomously, that distance expands.
Today, even relatively constrained AI systems sometimes produce low-quality outputs or optimize for engagement rather than usefulness. Vitalik referred to generating slop instead of solving meaningful problems.
His argument is that increasing autonomy without strengthening alignment mechanisms increases systemic risk. If AI capabilities scale exponentially, then expanding their independence without clear guardrails may amplify unintended consequences.
EtherWorld previously reported on Vitalik’s zk API proposal, which aims to make Ethereum a foundational layer for verifiable AI outputs. That proposal focused on cryptographic verification, trust minimization, and embedding AI accountability within Ethereum’s architecture.
Ethereum’s Philosophy is Human Freedom First
Vitalik also tied his response back to Ethereum’s founding philosophy. “The point of ethereum is to set us free,” he wrote.
Ethereum was designed to reduce centralized control over humans. It was built to empower individuals with programmable assets, censorship resistance, and trust-minimized coordination.
Decentralization in this context means reducing hidden trust assumptions between people. It does not automatically mean transferring agency to non-human systems.
EtherWorld also reported on ERC-8004, which signals Ethereum’s move toward agentic AI markets. That proposal reflects growing interest in enabling AI-driven marketplaces and autonomous service coordination on-chain.
Agentic markets introduce powerful possibilities. AI entities negotiating services. Autonomous demand and supply formation. Machine-to-machine economic coordination.
Bro, this is wrong.

Lengthening the feedback distance between humans and AIs is not a good thing for the world.
Today, it means you're generating slop instead of solving useful problems for people. It's not even well-optimized for helping people have fun.
Once AI becomes…
The Sovereignty Question in AI
Another key theme in Vitalik’s response was the idea of sovereignty. Many AI systems described as autonomous rely heavily on centralized model providers and infrastructure operators. Even if an AI agent holds a wallet and executes smart contracts, the intelligence layer often remains dependent on centralized training pipelines and hosting environments.
If the intelligence stack remains centralized, then attaching a wallet does not magically make the system decentralized. This tension becomes more pronounced as AI agents begin interacting economically on-chain. The infrastructure layer may be decentralized. The intelligence layer may not be.
