Celo, the eco-friendly blockchain built to help people around the world, has taken a bold step. It is leaving its old home as an independent network and joining the Ethereum family as a Layer‑2 solution. This move promises faster, cheaper transactions and even more security for its users.
A Journey Home
Imagine a traveler returning to a safe, strong home. That’s how many feel about Celo. After years of building its own path, Celo has decided to merge with Ethereum. By using Ethereum’s trusted system, Celo can offer lower fees and faster transactions. This change means that all the cool apps and features on Celo, like easy mobile payments, will keep working just as well.

Coinbase Joins In
Coinbase, one of the world’s top crypto exchanges, has given its strong support to Celo’s move. Just a few hours ago, Coinbase announced that it will support this change by updating its system. During the upgrade, people will see a short pause in depositing or withdrawing Celo’s token (called CGLD).
How It Works
Celo is now using new technology from Ethereum:
- Optimism’s OP Stack: This helps process transactions off the main network, which makes everything run faster.
- EigenDA: This tool stores data in a smart way, lowering costs and keeping the system secure.
- Blob Transactions: These new kinds of transactions let the network handle more data quickly and at low cost.
All of these improvements work together like gears in a well-oiled machine, ensuring that users get a smooth, fast, and low-cost experience.
Better for Everyone
This move is not just about technology. It is also about making life better for people. With lower fees and faster speeds, more people can use Celo for everyday payments and other important tasks. Plus, Celo’s focus on being green—reducing its carbon footprint—remains strong, showing that new technology can help the planet too.
This is amazing to see. Improving worldwide access to basic payments/finance has always been a key way that ethereum can be good for the world, and it's great to see @Celo getting traction.
