Every year, International Women’s Day (IWD) is a time to celebrate the contributions of women across various fields, including Ethereum & Web3. In the Ethereum community, diversity & inclusion are essential for growth & innovation.
Women are making a significant impact in Ethereum by contributing to development, research, governance, & community building. This blog highlights how groups like Ethereum Cat Herders (ECH) & Women in Ethereum Protocol (WiEP) are empowering women to get involved & succeed in the Ethereum space.
EthCatHerders: Encouraging Inclusion & Diversity
Ethereum Cat Herders (ECH) is a group dedicated to simplifying Ethereum development & governance. Their mission is to support Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), network upgrades, & developer coordination.
"We’d like to see increased diversity not only at the client level but also within client developer groups," said Pooja Ranjan, Herder-in-Chief at ECH.
To celebrate International Women’s Day & spotlight incredible women in the space, ECH organized two Twitter Spaces:

Women in Ethereum Protocol (WiEP)
Women in Ethereum Protocol (WiEP) is a community-driven initiative dedicated to fostering gender diversity within the Ethereum ecosystem. Founded by the Ethereum Foundation & Ethereum Cat Herders, WiEP strives to create a decentralized future where every voice is heard.
Their mission is to ensure that contributors of all genders feel valued, inspired, & supported while making diversity the norm—not the exception—in Ethereum development. La Donna Higgins and Hsiao-Wei Wang are the co-founders of Women in Ethereum Protocol (WiEP).
How WiEP Helps Women in Ethereum?
WiEP provides women with opportunities to contribute to the Ethereum protocol through structured learning, mentorship, & open-source collaboration. By building an inclusive space, WiEP empowers women to gain hands-on experience, network with experts, & enhance their technical skills.
The initiative supports Ethereum's growth by making protocol-level contributions more accessible to underrepresented groups.
WiEP Study Group
The WiEP Study Group is a hands-on initiative designed to support women in learning & contributing to the Ethereum protocol. Unlike traditional study groups, it emphasizes practical, project-based collaboration while providing mentorship, networking, & skill development.
The study group is designed primarily for intermediate to advanced developers with at least one year of coding experience. However, motivated beginners are encouraged to join.
WiEP runs study group cohorts where participants work on Ethereum protocol-related projects. Each cohort has its own dedicated README file outlining participants, objectives, & resolved issues.
WiEP strives to increase women's participation in Ethereum research, development, & decision-making. By supporting initiatives like WiEP & ECH, Ethereum is advancing toward a more diverse & inclusive blockchain community. Let’s celebrate the contributions of women in Ethereum & empower the next generation of builders, founders, & innovators. Happy International Women’s Day!
